Matomo – Not Letting Google Spy On You
As with most websites and mobile Apps, you’d have likely embedded Google Analytics code on your site to enable web analytics. It gives you powerful insights into what your visitors and users are doing and best of all, it’s FREE!
This famous cartoon says it best. “If you’re not paying for it, you’re the product!”
Truthfully, I’ve not read the terms and conditions of the Google Analytics service in detail. I’d imagine Google would at least use aggregated, anonymized data for various purposes.
Now if you’re a very successful site/App with significant influence in a particular domain, would you be comfortable knowing that Google can see the details of how users are interacting with your product? What if Google has a product that competes with yours?
One of our clients did have that concern and we helped them moved away from Google Analytics, using an open source solution – Matomo. We developed the tracking mechanism for sending data up to a self-hosted Matomo where external parties are not privy to.
